Avodart or TURP to relieve BPH symptoms in normal size prostate

By Jim Devine Thursday, April 01, 2010

I am 67 yrs old & have had bothersome urine frequency & nocturia BPH symptoms for over 12 years. I have been treated with Flomax & tried the microwave procedures to no avail. My urologist conducted a uro-rectal bladder volume eval recently which he said showed him that although I have a small mass gland, it is the inner mass of tissue not th size of the gland that is severely squeezing the urethra & causing my problems. I asked him if Avodart instead of Flomax would help relieve the symptoms since I head it shrionks the Prostate. He said that since medication mgt. for years & the micowave process 5 years ago didn't help, he would not recommend Avodart since my prostate gland itself was not enlarged. Therefore he recommended that the only relief I would get is from what he called  "gold standard" procedure or "TURP". Do you think Avodart would be worth a try or would you too vote for the TURP?

Given that you did not respond to medication previously it is not very likel that you will have a response now.  I would recommend either a laser prostatectomy or a TURP.
