My husband was diagnosed in Feb. 2007 with a Gleason score total of 9. He received external radiation and internal radiation implants. He also began Lupron therapy right away which was to continue for 2 years. He received excellent results following his 1 year follow-up and was able to discontinue the Lupron injections. (he had 3 injections over a 9 month period) It will be a year in October since his last injection. He now has multiple fractures in his pelvic area and has just been diagnosed with Osteoporosis. He is now scheduled to see a specialist as to possible treatment. His onocologist doesn't believe the Lupron caused the fractures and Osteo even though the side effects include both as side effects. His urologist believes it was the Lupron. By the way, my husband is 66. We also researched on the web -- believe the side effects. They won't happen to everyone, of course, but they do happen!
Hi Stacey,
You've come to a good place for information!! Here are some links to help you understand a little about what your dad is going through and what the Lupron Depo means as far as treatment.
First, to get a good overview of what prostate cancer is, you can look here. There is a very good section in highlights, that discusses watching versus waiting. You can read that here. There is a section about alternative treatments which include hormone supression. You can read about that here, as well as radiation and other common treatments. Each person is different, so this information should only be used as a means to make sure you have what you need when you speak to the doctor. This website can not act in the place of a doctor. Only your father's physician knows what is best for your father, but it will help you to be informed of what is available.
I hope this helps. Please stay in touch and let us know how you and your father are doing!
