High PSA count

Dear Doctor,

I have gone through 2 biopsy surgeries with the last year. The surgeries were 6 months apart and both results came back negative. Yet, my PSA count continues to climb. It started at 2.25 about a year ago and is now at 12.5.

I am scheduled for evaluation and tests the end of this month at a cancer reasearch center in Buffalo NY...I guess I just confused as to why my docotr said I wasn't at risk yet my count still climbs...

I am seeking a second opinion, that's the reason fo rthe appointment in Buffalo..

a few questions: 1) how big is your prostate? 2) what did the original biopsy show? have you tried using antibiotics and repeating the PSA?

Doctor,

Just last week I went through another 12 section biopsy. The results should be ready this Friday. My local PCP wrote notes that stated I was on a 6 week antibiotic for further evaluation. Funny, he never gave me a script for said drug. That's one of many reason I chose to go elsewhere.

I am now being treated at the Roswell Cancer Reasearch Center in Buffalo.

I just recently ran into a similar situation.

Last January I went for a 12 section biopsy as my psa count was about 4.

Results showed all but one biopsy normal. This single biopsy was shown to be inflamed.

The recomendation was to do a PSA count in 6 months. This new PSA count is at 9.

The recommendation is to have another biopsy but to check deeper in the prostate and the outer area of the prostate. (regions not tested in the first biopsy).

So I am interested in what your results are an what you are doing. Currently I am just researching the issue.

Since there is no evidence of cancer yet it may be inflamantion.

I was not given a course of antibiotics in case this was inflamation. I was told antibiotics were not effective for prostate inflamantion.

Anyway I was just curious.

I am currently undergoing radiation treatments. I am also on a feamle birth control called " depo lupron"...My count peaked at 16.05 in May of 07...I went to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Philadelphia.

It was also suggested I have surgery...I said no to surgery only because I felt that if it was done, it would release cancer cells throughout my body...turns out the CTCA confirmed my thoughts.

As of last week, my PSA count has gone from 16.00 down to 2.71 and is continuing to go down..

Hey thanks for the update and I wish you well in your treatment.

One question I have, was cancer detected?

I assume so since you are taking radiation treatment.

Another question I have is about the relationship between PSA and the cancer.

As far as I can tell PSA is just an indicator that cancer may be present. A high PSA count does not necessarily mean cancer.

So I am not sure that PSA dropping would indicate the cancer is going away. At lease that would be my view.

Do you have a different understanding of PSA count and prostate cancer?

The cancer I had was detected by 3 different biopsy's. When they did find it, the tumors were microscopic but apparent...The depo lupron reduces one's testosterone, by doing so for long periods of time, (2-3years) the cancer basically starves to death.

I also have to see the doctor every 3 months for a shot and check up.

I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer... and it had already spread onto my pelvis, hips, ribs, spine, etc etc... my two doctors each had a blood PSA run, and the labs ran the psa up to the top of the scale...diluted it, ran it back up and so on... my blood PSA topped out in excess of 2,000... to be exact.. 2,082... I had lost almost 100-lbs in body weight (from 252lbs down to 156lbs).. and was immediately started on Leuprolide Acetate... and things began to look up, I have since gained 36lbs, and am able to move around without much pain.. my treatment began 3 months ago.. I began with a "1-mo. injection".. then took a 4-mo. injection... Brian

My 79 year old father just had a PSA reading of greater than 2,000. They are sending him for a biopsy and a bone scan. I'm just looking for some information. Obviously this number is quite high. Can you help me?

Nena... I got down in my back and left hip the end of 2006... and of course refused to see a doctor... until July 2007... after I was bedridden and had lost over 100-lbs of bodyweight... my family doctor sent me to a Urologist.. and my blood PSA came back @ 2084.2... and I was given less than 3-months to live "IF" I did not begin treatment ASAP.... he put me on "LUPRON" ... an every 4-month injection (muscle in your hip).. plus had a Bone Scan, Cat Scan, X-rays, etc ... and was diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer & Advanced Prostate Matastasized Bone Cancer...( I was 63 at the time)... and of course had No insurance, so wife and I burned up most of our savings until Nov. 2008 when I turned 65.... MY Cancers were so Advanced that the Lupron worked for about 8-months... and my PSA had come down to " 9.6 " ... then began to steadly climb UPWARDS... this is when my Urologist sent me to a true Cancer Doctor.. an Oncologist.. and I have been on Chemo for the past 3-months... my PSA had climbed to over "800" again... but, the Chemo has brought it down to "551.0" at this time... hopefully we can get this mess into remission, and I can again attain quality of life... not 24-7 bone pain of some type.... other than this, I just go on with my life, and do as much as I can each day... hopefully this will give you some insight about what your dad may have to go through... I should have been directed to MY current Oncologist ASAP... instead of messing around with the Urologist for over 1 1/2 yrs.. as my Cancers may have been in remission long before now... I'm looking at my 3rd summer down.... because after the Chemo.. Hi JBS,

My name is Jennifer. My dad is 74 and has has prostate problems over years but they have always gone away with antibiotics. This time 4 weeks ago he got a PSA test which was 4.5 ....He keeps taking different antibiotics and is afraid is someone operates or biopsy it will progress faster. He don't like to get too many xrays either.. Please let me know how you are doing... thanks Jen

Hello, i'm Sylvia I recently went to the Doctor with my father and found out he has advanced prostate cancer. His Psa level is 32 and i'm wondering if someone can tell me go over this with me and the outcome after surgery which he will be having shortly. Does it come back or anything I should be aware of.

Hi,

My father is currently waiting to have a biopsy done. His first PSA test was done and showed a reading of 95. Since he was taking antibiotics for a urinary infection they felt that the test result could be elevated due to the antibiotics. 1 month later he had another test ( after being off antibiotics) and the reading climbed to 111. This prompted more testing and thus far has had a bone scan, ultrasound and next the biopsy. He has several other issues that seem to be related ie/lower back pain, blood in the urine occassionally and I am just trying to get a handle on how all of this is coming together. He is 80 years old so needless to say he is not looking forward to what may take place over the next while. Any comments about a PSA number of 111 and its relevance would be helpful.

Hi Sylvia, sorry to hear about your dad. My dad was told in 1998 he had some sort of issue with his prostrate, which they did a bore out and tested, and was told it was not cancer. Dad had suffered with mysterious illnesss for about 30years, chronic pain, kidney stones, pancretitus, diabetes... etc his kidneys were serverly underfunctioning and the concern was he would need dialysis. So he was constantly at the doctors and having blood tests. In more recent years he had compained about symtoms that should have warned of prostrate cancer, however it wasnt until 2008 (10 years later) that in 'another' hospital visit he was diagnosed. Sadly to late for dad as it had become secondary cancer in his bones..... probably had been for quite awhile. My point with this, is that your dad has been lucky enough to have his cancer diagnosed early which usually means treatment will be very succesful. But dont ever let your guard down and think the doctors will pick it up if it re occurs (or as in my dads case, was perhaps miss diagnosed originally as benign)......... I would suggest that once he gets through this part, that for the rest of his life he asks for the psa test annually, and if there are symptoms then push a proper check up with the doctor.... dont rely on them knowing his history and feeling to silly to question their judgement. They are only human, and do make mistakes!! Good luck... do you have any brothers?? As we were told that related boys should have regular psa tests after approx 30 years as it can be genetic. I know mine is not a happy story, and i have only added this as a warning to not accept a dianosis or to presume your doctor will always be right. Prostrate cancer is usually extremly treatable, as long as you dont ignore the warnings for to long..

Hello Judy,

Thanks for your response back. I am also really sorry about your father regarding his condition, my prayers go out to you and your family.

I wanted to update you on my father, basically after surgery they tested him again and apparently the cancer has gone to one of his lymph nodes and released out to his body.

They cannot detect where it is at this time so they considered hormone therapy for him and will have to go ahead with it for 5 + years. His Psa counts have been getting back to normal but I still like you said am still concerned about it because you never know!!! I'm not sure if you have heard of the Budwig diet it is a german diet and has helped enormously on my father. Basically I have been researching and it suppose to help men with advanced prostaste cancer. I have put him on a strict organic diet which includes having flax seed oil everday with cottage cheee and more.

Honestly, he has been feeling a lot better because he also suffers from high blood pressure. I will tell you a brief story about a brother of a friend of mine who had 3 months to live and he found out about this diet and he has been living for 10 years now. can you believe this??God's miracle.

Anyhow if this by all means can help you a bit I am happy to share it with you.

THERE IS A LOT OF CHANGES IN THE DIET YOU WILL BE HAVE TO MONITOR.

YOU CAN GET THE RECIPE ON THE NET. I DO WANT TO SAY YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THIS DIET WORD BY WORD.

3 years ago My biposi came positive. and i was on hormonal treatmment and radiation terrapy, after one year an a half my psa level was .02 and six monts after my psa was 40, five days later i was retested and my psa climed to 40.9

into the last 2 readings i was diagnosed with an stomacal infection. for which peniciling was prescribed. My doctor recommends a bone scan. which was taken at the beginning of the treatment. I am kind of coumffused, can any body help me a little . to get this of my mind. thank you so much.

Try taking a supplement called BLA look it up and also HONOKARE also take 3 x a DAY 6 DROPS OF VITAMIN D3 EACH DROP 100O MG-do not take symthatic vitamin D..

Do the budwig diet it is a form of Cootage cheese and Flax seed oil and grinded flax seeds--

this may bring your PSA down after 1 month.
