Prolonged bout of blood in semen

I am 53 years old and have quite an active sex life with my wife of 50.  About 3 years ago, after intercourse, I noticed blood seeping from my penis.  I immediately thought it may be something serious so I phoned the NHS helpline who told me it was probably nothing to worry about but advised me to see my GP.  He gave me a prostate examination and referred me to a specialist.

Whilst the specialist was examining me for prostate problems he discovered a hernia that I knew nothing about.  He prescribed some antibiotics for a prostate inflammation and advised me to have the hernia repaired as soon as possible, so in November 2005 I had the hernia operation as advised.

Once the hernia repair had healed I had no sign of blood in my semen for about the following 6 months but ever since then it has gradually got worse, starting with just a trace but sometimes there is quite a lot of fresh bright red blood. Just lately it has got really bad with a lot of blood coming from my penis.

I have spoken to my GP about it on a couple of occasions and he says it happens and not to worry about it.  But I am worried and my wife is also worried enough that it's starting to put her off having sex.  I sometimes wonder if it could be anything to do with the hernia operation I had as it is still sore in the area of the operation.  It probably has nothing at all to do with it but I would like advice from someone other than my own GP.  I would welcome any thoughts or opinions on what I can do to stop this blood coming from me. I have seen ads for prostate medications on the internet and I am wondering if they, or any other supplements are of any use in treating this.

Have you seen an urologist?  I would do that as soon as possible.  A GP is not a specialist with all knowledge of the prostate etc.  What is your PSA?

I have been referred to a urologist once again and I am now waiting for an appointment. I'm sorry but I do know what you mean by PSA, would you please explain. Thanks, PD

PSA is a test:

The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test measures the level of PSA in the blood. A blood sample is drawn and the amount of PSA is measured in a laboratory.

Low is good, it goes higher as a man ages but it can be high in a young many for many reasons.

I've never had a PSA test but I will mention it to the urologist when I see him next Wednesday. Thanks for your advice and interest, I will let you know the outcome of my visit. It's good to communicate with someone who has experience of these matters.

Paul,

I hope all goes well at the urologist visit. I am surprised that your primary doctor never did a PSA test on you starting at the age 50. My husband has been tested each year when got his physical. He is 59 and has prostate cancer ~ good risk ~ T1c, grade 3, gleason 6. I am sure that information will be mind boggling. My husband had no syptoms just a high PSA for his age in March. Well to long to post here.

Know that you will be in my thought and hoping all goes well for you!

Hi Paul,

I completed radiation treatments in January of this year.  I have dark, very dark blood in semen.  It indicates to me that I do not have recent bleeding, but blood left from the treatments.  I agree that you need to see a urologist.

My GP runs test frequently that are "age appropriate."  He caught my elevated PSA and very very early detection of the cancer.

So keep at it and ask what you should watch for at your age,  Had a stress test?  Echocardiogram?  Fasting blood glucose test (diabetes).  The ealier we know the more effective tha treatment, and we do less damage to ourselves.

Be well

I am 40 and have been having this problem ever since I had my last hernia operation. The kugel mesh patch put out a recall. I am gpoing to find out if they used this kugel patch on me hopefully tomorrow. You should also find out if they used this for your hernia operation, there have been a lot of problems with it. Yours started before the hernia was operated on though, still find out. Look up the kugel mesh and look at all the lawsuites that are going on. If you find anything else out about this problem let me know. Good luck

your docs most likely did not tell you of the chances of losing a nut as they did me but if you keep seeking out help ultimatly you will find someone who will tell you your teste blood flow was compt somehow (hernia surgery sshhhhhh) then they remind you of your age and convince you sex isent important anymore and if you try to persue whos at fault well thats when you find out just how insignifagent men really are  If they would have me of the risks I would have asked the doc who would he go to too get a hearnia fixed
