Erectile Dysfunction: Don't Despair---Help is on the Way

By Jay Motola, Health Pro Monday, February 15, 2010
In 1998, the release of ViagraTM, heralded the era in America of treating erectile dysfunction using pills. With the release of this drug, the discussion of erectile dysfunction (ED) was brought out of the bedroom, and into the physician's office. Numerous TV commercials and print ads can be seen t...

YOu forgot to mention penile revascularization surgery.  Great surgery, especially after a physical accident due to bike riding or any injury to the peritenium.  This surgery, done correctly, is a permanent cure for ED.  Dr's find it easier and cheaper to place patients on the orals instead of recommending the by pass surgery.  since the surgery is only performed on men under 50 one can miss this window of opportunity for surgery and be condemned to a lifetime of dr, prescriptions, quantity limitations, insurance and high cost monthly.  Dr. Irwin Goldstein is known world wide for that surgery.  I'm sure others do it too.

These three drugs  mentioned for ED have side effects probably on heart. what is another good treatment to replace them?

The 3 drugs mentioned do not have cardiac side effects. The issue is that if patients have serious heart disease that require the use of nitroglycerin, then these drugs can not be used.

Other medications that can be used include Caverject, which is a medication that is injected directly into the penis, and MUSE, which is a suppository that is inserted into the urethra.  Results with MUSE however, are not as satisfactory as those obtained with oral medications.

Hello Jay;

Thank you for your quick response to my commentary question of the three drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

from my practical point of view when I take vigra or cialis My heart beat rate increases and  I feel pounding of the heart too.  Does that sound good then?

Thanks

I have tried Viagra and it did nothing for me.  Is it possible that one of the other two oral treatments might work?

Although all 3 oral agents are very similar, patients may respond to any or all of them. Given the lack of response to Viagra, it would be a good idea to try the other oral agents, before trying other more invasive therapies.

I had a prostecomy done in late August.  When might I be able to determine what the erectile dysfunction effects (if any) will be.

Patients demonstrate return of erectile function at various times during recovery. If there is not any clinical response by one year, then it is not likely to occur beyond that. Some Urologists believe in the early use of the oral agents and you should discuss this with your surgeon.

I tried for many years to battle ED ,I probably tried everything on market out there, i refused the injection into the penis. I finally made the decision to regain my life back so my wife and I could share our intimacy. I went for the penile prosthesis. By far the best move , the post op was not that bad . My wife and I are like 18yr old again. I reccomend it!!!!! thank you Dr Motola
