Can I respond to this person by saying "Do not" - i repeat "do not" - go with either the urolume or the memokath. I am a retired urologist living Florida, I too have BPH.
However, these two devices have a high failiure rate, and the consequences are just not worth even thinking about.
I was self catheterizing until about three months ago. It is humiliating, painful and downright undignified.
Then a Urologist friend, who is still practicing, recomended that I try a little rubber stent, called the Spanner. It opens the prostatic urethra, like a foley, but that is where the similarity ends. The spanner allows me to urinate normally. No Bag. It is tiny too, about the size of your little finger, and pretty much painless. I say pretty much, as you still have to position it inside the urethra. But compared to the alternatives...
Most importantly - I have complete control over my life again.
Like Dr Motola recomends, you need to discuss with your Urologist what other otpions you have. But I would stronlgy suggest you look into this device before embarking down the permanent stent route.
Good luck,
Joe S
