I am a PhD female sufferer from calcium oxalate stones, both kidneys. An emergency room doctor prescribed Flomax to assist the passage of a 5mm stone. I had 13 stones, 11 not worth a second look (confirmed by scanning). Within 24 hours of taking the Flomax the largest stone passed (5mm). I stopped taking Flomax on the third day. On the 7th day the second largest stone (3-4mm) passed spontaneously. I am told that if the stones are this size the Flomax acts to widen the ureter at the junction with the kidney just that little that permits passage. The ureter widens presumably because of a relaxation of tensed muscles (not sure about this one). Given the short duration of taking Flomax, I do not think it is bad for women to take this drug, despite the information given by the company on the printed box insert that Flomax is not for women or children. Having had lithotripsy on both kidneys in the past (13mm stones), I can say that Flomax is a Godsend for those stones just a little too big to pass by themsleves and too small to warrant those manmade lightning strikes. As with all Internet information, be sensible, particularly with medical tips. There is no substitute for a professional urologist whose favourite hobby is ogling at your kidney.

I hope that this works for you! Please make sure your doctor follows you through on this. Lemonade is interesting--certainly highly acidic. I do not think that I would take it every day (I have intestinal problems that citric acid aggravates). What I have found also, via a friend in Germany, are Maria Treben's remedies. They are sold in North America under the name "Flora". I take Swedish Bitters by flora--a pack in a 750 ml of vodka lasts more than 2 years. You take 1 tsp per day. It does not go off because the 45+ herbs in the blend is essentially pickled in alcohol. It tastes bad. But my last scan showed that the 20-30 odd small stones had passed, from both kidneys. I now see a nephrologist rather than a urologist (the latter being the surgeon). Again, with all internet tips, THINK before believing "this is for me". I am now 49 years old. Another tip is joining the Vulvar Pain Foundation. This group puts out a fabulous cook book that uses ingredients that are low in calcium oxalate builders. Since cooking simple food, my life has also become simple. I hope these small tips will help at least one person out there. Hang in there! Because women are less prone to stones than men, if you get this disease the waiting rooms become more interesting!!!!!

I have been on flomax for 2 weeks now trying to pass a 5mm stone. The pain is tolerable with flomax, but if I go off of it for a day it gets increasingly unbearable. I've never had it take this long. I have an appointment with a urologist next Friday, but several of the posts here may be useful. I appreciate the comments.

The last stone I had was just about 4 months ago. My urologist did an ultrasound about a year ago and said that I have hundreds in both kidneys. He said most are small enough they should pass without much trouble, but there were several larger stones. Since then, I've passed 3 that really caused trouble, this is the 3rd. I'd love to find out what is causing them and solve the cause. Seeing a nephrologist is a great idea.

I had read somewhere that Vit. B6 and magnesium would help prevent additional kidney stones from forming.  I had one pass about 2 yrs ago after being on Flomax for one week and it was painless; recently have had cat scan that shows one about 5.5 mm stuck in left ureter.  Have been on Flomax for almost 2 weeks but stone hasn't moved yet.  Had started taking Vit. B-6 and magnesium about 18-24 months ago but am thinking it didn't work?  All the high oxalic acid foods are some of my favorite foods (nuts, peanut butter, spinach, rhubarb, beans, tea, chocolate, sweet potatoes).  Anyone else have to take Flomax for an extended time before the stone moved?

My urologist has wanted to schedule a stent procedure for me (taking the stone out with special instrument first and stent put in all way from kidney down to bladder, to prevent it from swelling shut, since my stone is stuck in ureter.  But he said he didn't think it was completely blocking the ureter (which could be very problematic).  However, I have heard from others that the stent procedure is extremely painful and since I cannot tolerate any pain meds (make me sick no matter how I take them), I am hesitant to have a stent put in.  I am 66 years old and worry about the ureter accidentally being torn open in the process of trying to snare the stone.  Has anyone had the procedure where they go in thru the back (surgical) to remove stone?  I am hoping another 2 weeks of Flomax and lots of fluids will help.  Also fractured my lower back recently so that has contributed to much lower back pain.  Will really concentrate on fluids in coming week.  Thanks for the info!

I am a 45 year old woman using flomax to help me pass kidney stones.  The only problem I am having is that I now cannot hold even the smallest amount of fluid in my bladder, out it comes every 20 minutes!  This is a nuisance to say the least and wearing bladder control protection is now a must.  Hopefully it will help pass my kidney stones...and fast!!

I am a 40 year old woman with 5 kidney stones.  A trip to the E.R. and a CT scan confirmed what I thought might have been a common UTI, no just more stones!  ER Doc put me on 5 days of Flomax, which I can't tell whether it is working or not.  But sex is better!  I am also very light sensitive and pressure sensitive in my eyes on the Flomax.  Urologist wants me to continue 2 more weeks on the Flomax (my hunny is happy) and start taking  1080 mg of Potassium citrate daily, and drink lemon water as much as I can.  Liquids, liquids, liquids.  I will follow up with a KUB xray in 2 weeks.  Doc can't tell whether some of the "stones" are in my lower ureter or pelvic veins.  If I were overweight, he would be able to see for sure.  Its nice to be called "too thin" for once.  Love my doc.  Hope to catch the little suckers so I can find out the chemical makeup.  Until then, I have oxycodone for severe pain.  This is the third reoccurrance of kidney stones for me.

Your response did not answer the concerned lady's question! try reading her question again and give t a try.  yes or no would have assisted her more than your gargling or tpping around the question with no direct answer,
