Dear Dr. Motola,

What is the best diet for aiding in the cure of prostate cancer? I know about avoiding red meat and processed foods and increasing omega-3's as in fish. But is pasta ok? Also, I have heard that there seems to be a more extreme approach through a macrobiotic approach which might have more success in affecting a positive result of curing the cancer. Have you heard of this? Can you give some guidance?

There is no consensus regarding what diet or dietary supplements are best for aiding in the cure of prostate cancer. Clearly low fat diets have been advocated for the treatment of various malignancies. Efforts at identifying vitamin supplements (Vitamin E, lycopene, selenium) have recently been suspended as preliminary data from the SELECT study have not demonstrated any benefits. With the exception of anecdotal reports, there have not been any advantages that have been identified with the use of macrobiotics.
