Q: I've been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate and retaining too much urine in my bladder. I'm taking Flomax and Avadart

I've been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate and retaining too much urine in my bladder (after urinating at the urologist's office).  I strongly dislike the side effects of Flomax and Avadart (generic forms of each).  I don't take any other medications, and would like to deal with this condition without medication.  I am 64 years old, and in very good shape.  I would be willing to do whatever was needed, such as limiting fluid intake, staying physically active, and limiting intake of decongestants and antihistamines.

When medication fails to treat the symptoms of BPH, there are non-pharmacologic options available. Various surgical treatments are highly effective in managing prostate enlargement. There are both traditional surgical options such as TURP and less invasive alternatives such as laser or microwave treaments that may be effective. This should be discussed with your Urologist.
