Q: After robotic prostatectomy I was continent after about 3 months. About 2 weeks after completion of adjuvant therapy I become partially incontinent. What can I do? Will Kegel exercises help now?

I religiously did the Kegel exercises after the robotic prostatectory. I did not experience partial incontinence during adjuvant therapy. It is really depressing to be partially incontinent now. Will re-starting Kegel exercises help? Is there anything I can do to become continent again?? Thanks.

I will assume that the adjuvant therapy that you received is radiation therapy (RT). If so RT can be associated with the new onset of incontinence. There are various types of incontinence. If you are experieincing incontinence that occurs when you cough, sneeze, or move, this is stress incontinence. Kegel exerecises may be effective however if it persists then correction can be undertaken with either a male sling or an artificial urinary sphincter depending on hte extent of the incontinence that you are obtaining, however surgical correction needs to be delayed for a minimum of 6 months post-radiation. If the type of incontinence is  such that leakage occurs after you have a sensation to void, this is urge incontinence and medical therapy can help resolve this.
