Can there be cancer in the prostate if the PSA has remained constant at 7.1 for one year in a 69 yr

No other symptoms except prostate slightly enlarged (taking saw palmetto for 10 years). Have been advised to have a biopsy. Can these release cancer cells into the system? Do I really need a biopsy?

Hi Dennis,

If you know your PSA is 7.1, then you must be seeing a doctor about this. What has your doctor suggested? Online resources are great places for you to get the information you need to ask questions and make informative decisions, but it can not take the place of your doctor's solid medical advice and care.

You can read about PSA test numbers, what they mean and how they affect the diagnosis of prostate issues in this section located here. This section talks about Age Adjusted PSA. Specifically, it says, "Recent data has redefined the way that urologists look at PSA, and what is considered a "normal" PSA.  Age-adjusted PSA values take into account that a 40-year-old should not have the same PSA as an 80-year-old. Accepted age-adjusted PSA rates are below 2.4 ng/ml for men under the age of 50 and 6.5 ng/ml for patients in their 70s."

If you have been prescribed any medication you can check out the medicines here in the drugs database. If you would like to find out about different treatments you can read about the treatments in the database located here.

I hope this information helps you. It is best to see your doctor. Taking suppliments like Saw Palmetto can be helpful, but make sure you tell your doctor what you are taking and follow his advice.

Take care and stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!
