Q: Drugs affecting PSA - Avodart, Lipitor or Hydrochlorot?

I am 80 years old and have an enlarged prostate diagnosed some years ago. I take Avodart and it keeps it normal. Then I had to start taking Lipitor and my prostate still stayed normal. Recently I had to start taking Hydrochlorot for high blood pressure. My doctor says that my PSA has gone up just a little but he does not know about my new medicine. Could that have caused it?

Hydrochlorothiazide should have no bearing on your PSA. The only Urological effects that you will notice would be urinary frequency. At age 80, you should not be very alarmed by a slight rise in your PSA.

Hi Lloyd,

Thanks for your question.  While we can't offer a diagnosis over the internet or give medical advice, you might want to look at our article on the Side Effects of Hydrochlorothiazide.

The article doesn't specifically mention a rise in PSA as a potential side effect, but the caveat is that the side effects listed are not a complete list; only your doctor or pharmacist will be able to tell if your rise in PSA might be linked to that medication rather than something else.

Please keep in mind the most men's PSA does rise as they age, but be on the lookout for a PSA level that increases at a more rapid pace.  You might want to check out our section on PSA Testing or What is a Normal PSA?

Hope this helps,

Dan
