Q: In 1996 I had radical retropubic Prostatectomy, after 15 years why is my PSA rising?

That was followed 1 year later, due to rising PSA results, with 36 radiation treatments of the pubic area.  Last year I began to show rising PSA readings again. It has risen about .6 every 6 months.  It is now 1.73.  Prior to then it was always less than 0.1. Any suggestions?

The fact that you had an early recurrence after a radical prostatectomy implies that at the time of initial surgery you most likely had positive surgical margins. That is the reason that the PSA initially started to rise. The PSA now rising at the rate that it is means that there is again a recurrence. Treatment needs to be based on several factors including your age, overall health, original pathology and imaging studies that should now be done.
