Q: Tailbone (coccyx) pain following radical prostatectomy. Is this a reported problem from others?

Coccyx pain 4 to 9 weeks after radical prostatectomy is very debilitating. Is this a reported problem with some patients after such surgery. Histopathology indicated that cancer is specimen confined and MRI, CT and total body bone scan do not reveal any extraprostatic disease nor metastatic involvement of skeleton. Lymph nodes and seminal vesicles are not involved.

Is it possible that pelvic floor exercises are causing the problem due to pull of muscles attached to coccyx or muscle(s) in spasm. Or is likely to be a problem from the operation which should settle down with time?

Dr. Jay Motola,

I am very interested in this post.  My uncle had surgery on his prostate a couple of years ago.  He has had severe coccyx pain ever since.  I believe that he was told the pain is related to a pinched nerve.  He is fading away and is now a ghost of his former self as he is in constant pain.  He cannot sit down for more than a few minutes at a time.  He has been a carer for his wife who has epilespy since they were young and doesn't deserve to be living with absolutely no quality of life.  He is the kindest soul.  He has recently said he doesn't know how he can go on.   He has seen doctors here in Australia but as far as I know he has been told that he basically has to live with it as best he can.  He is on pain medication and the latest suggestion from doctors was that he attend pain management classes.  Is there no possible way to fix this?  How can there possibly be nothing that can be done?

My email address is jlml@deakin.edu.au, if you have any information related to this condition or procedures which may help (which my uncle could take to his doctors), could you please respond to this post or email me.

It would be the greatest gift to help take away this man's suffering.  I ask you kindly if you could help in anyway possible, I would love to hear your expert response.
