Q: severe groin pain during erection

My husband has an inguinal hernia and at age 60, evidence of prostate enlargement. However he has recently had difficulty urinating and has to be catheterized if he doesnt go for over 24 hrs. He has also began to have intense stabbibg pain in his groin that worsens with an erection and swelling on the lower left abdominal area, just above the groin. The pain radiates down the inside of his left upper thigh. No one has an answer for anything and we are currently in hospital. What can this be?
