Q: My psa has tripled in one year -- from 1.7 to 5.2. Does this indicate aggressive prostate cancer?

I also have urinary discomfort and lower back pain and was diagnosed with a mild urinary infection.  My primary care physician gave me Cipro for one week, which cleared up the infection but did not drop the PSA.  The discomfort has returned.  Last year, my digital rectum examination did not raise any questions.   Any thoughts?  Thanks.

The rate of change of PSA is very important and this certainly does represent a fairly rapid rise. However the recent UTI that you had can still be having a negative impact on your PSA reading. The fact that the discomfort has returned implies that the infection may never have cleared up and you may need to be treated again for an infection prior to repeating the PSA.
