Must prostatectomy involve severing the urethra and disabling the inner sphincter?

I am a candidate for prostatectomy, and the surgeon referred by my doctor employs a robotic system and a protocol that involves severing and reconnecting the urethra, disabling the inner urinary sphincter.  Is that standard or universal practice?
