Category:Prostate

I have blood in my semen. It all started after a long truck ride to Canada and back.

My Urologist says not to worry about it that it isn't cancer.  every other doctor I've talked to said the same. My urolgist checked my prostate and says it isn't cancer. Now for the big kicker, this has been going on since last July, so it has been over a year and there is blood in the semen every time.  Is it time to get a different doctor.  What test can be done to find out why I still have blood in the semen.  the color is like a rust color.

Hi John Mussomele,

According to the Harvard Health Publications, "bloody semen is almost never a sign of a serious underlying medical problem." You can read the entire article here. Dr Jay Motola also wrote an article in answer to a member's question about bloody semen. You can read that article here.

Dr Motola does mention that there are concerns when other conditions are present. "A recent study has demonstrated an increased risk of prostate cancer in men with hematospermia. Obviously a rectal examination needs to be performed, and depending on your family history and age, a PSA determination."

There have also been users here who experienced similar issues. One of them was Paul Durham. His posting can be read here. There were some comments with more information that you might be interested in.

I hope this helps. Stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!
