Q: I just learned that my PSA count is 125. Does that mean I have a high risk for cancer?

Two weeks ago I noticed that I had lost 8 pounds and was having difficulty in urinating.  I went to the Doctor and he took blood and urine test.  The PSA count was not ready.  The Doctor said I had an extremely bad prostate infection and put me on 500mg tab Levofloxacin.  I am 59 years old and my family has a high risk of cancer.  The Doctor called today and said he wanted to get a fluid test by feeling the prostate.  He made the comment that he has never seen the PSA count as high.  I have been on the medicine for 12 days now I have my appetite back and have gained 5 pounds back.  My normal weight was 193 and was down to 184.  I am back up to about 186.

A PSA of 125 associated with wait loss most likely represents prostate cancer. However elevated PSA readings can also be obtained with prostate infections. If you repeat PSA has not normalized, then you need to undergo prostate biopsy.
