My 81 yr old dad is being treated with a monthly injection and his PSA # went from 70 to 16, what does that mean ?

Your dad is being treated with a drug that is blocking the production of testosterone and is most likely an LH/RH analog. (It could also be a newer agent which is an LH/RH antagonist). This drug causes an overstimulation of hormones that result in a decrease in testosterone production. Testosterone is the hormone that allows prostate cancer to grow. Blocking the hormone, results in a control of the prostate cancer, which is reflected by the falling PSA.

Hi Gillian,

Thanks for you question.  I've asked one of the doctors on our site to offer his thoughts on this - we'll let you know when a response has been posted.

In the mean time, you might want to check out our PSA Testing section, and more specifically, the articles on PSA Test Accuracy and What is a Normal PSA?.
