Does Prednisone lead to blood in the urine?  My son has colitius is bleeding from bowel and urine.  Doctor wants to give him chemo to stop.  Is this an appropriate treatment or are there any other options?

The use of prednisone is not commonly associated with the treatment of colitis. Prednisone may be utilized for the treatment of some inflammatory conditions of the kidney and has been associated with decreasing the likelihood of bleeding from the kidney in some of these conditions. An evaluation with a urologist is very important as there are other causes of hematuria that are associated with colitis.

Hi Becky,

Thanks for your question.  We can't offer treatment advice or diagnose, but I'm passing this along to one of the doctors on our site.  We'll let you know when a response has been posted.

Please do contact your doctor or pharmacist if you're concerned or think a new medication is causing this problem.

You may find more information here about the side effects of prednisone or the basics of ulcerative colitis.
