Q: I am desperate for sleep. Is there anything I can do to help frequent urination throughout the night?

I am 50 years old. I have had a problem for many years with frequent urination at night, most recently 8-12 times a night. I had regular prostate exams for the past 5 years and was told it was fine. Went to specialist in July. I got a cystoscopy and was told that my prostate was very large. I have been on Avodart and Flomax for 3 months now. I am still up 8-10 times a night. I'm really not seeing any improvements. Something doesn't seem right. Does anyone have any ideas? Should I get another opinion? Anyone know anyone I could see in Wilmington, Delaware / Philadelphia area? How long should this take before seeing at least some improvement? note: there was a 3 day period that I went away and forgot to take the meds and actually I got up once or twice those nights. HELP! I NEED SLEEP! I haven't slept more than 1/2 to 1 hour at a time for years now.

After 3 months of therapy with medication, your symptoms should have started to improve.  If you are very bothered by the symptoms, then it is time to consider other alternatives. There are many good treatments instead of drug therapy for the management of enlargement of the prostate.

Prostate enlargement is often the cause of nocturia (waking at night to urinate) Other sources of nocturia  should also  be eliminated by your doctors. Various minimally invasive treatments such as laser and microwaves exist to treat prostate enlargement. These treatments are usually performed as an outpatient and have a more favorable safety profile when compared with the more traditional "trimming" of the prostate which is know as a TURP.
