Q: Avodart vs. TURP for BPH Symptoms when med mgt & microwave have failed

I am 67 yrs old & have had bothersome urine frequency & nocturia BPH symptoms for over 12 years. I have been treated with Flomax & tried the microwave procedures to no avail. My urologist conducted a uro-rectal bladder volume eval recently which he said showed him that although I have a small mass gland, it is the inner mass of tissue not the size of the gland that is severely squeezing the urethra & causing my problems. I asked him if Avodart instead of Flomax would help relieve the symptoms since I heard it shrinks the Prostate. He said that since medication mgt. for years & the micowave process 5 years ago didn't help, he would not recommend Avodart since my prostate gland itself was not enlarged. Therefore he recommended that the only relief I would get is from what he called  "gold standard" procedure or "TURP". Do you think Avodart would be worth a try or would you too vote for the TURP?

If the infomation that you have been provided is accurate, then in all likelihood it sounds that a TURP would be beneficial.  If you are willing to tolerate the symptoms, then a trial of  Avodart may be worthwhile before having a definitive surgical procedure.  It does take between 3-6 months for Avodart to work.

Have you asked for a second opinion?

what do you have to lose by trying the Avodart for 6 months?  If it doesn't work you can still go for the TURP.
