Q: is it appropriate to take flomax and detrol for an enlarged prostate.

I am a 57 year old man that was just recently diagnosed with BPH. My urologist started me on 0.4mg Flomax daily. I went for a follow up 30 days after beginning the Flomax and I do not feel that there is any improvement. The Nurse Practitioner in his office now wants me to also take Detrol. Is this a common combination?

This is a very common treatement for patients with BPH.  The Flomax (alpha blocker) treats the obstruction of the prostate, while the Detrol (an anti-cholinergic) treats the irritative symptoms such as frequency and urgency.
