Q: Does taking a regularPSA indicate any recurrence of cancer after you've had a radical prostatectomy.

My husband a radical prostatectomy for advanced prostate cancer.  He did have some lymph node and nerve involvement.  His doctor recommends regular PSA tests.  If there is a recurrence of cancer in that area, does the PSA show that?

After a radical prostatectomy, rising PSA becomes the means of determining if there is any evidence of recurrence.   With extra-prostatic disease at the time of the initial surgery, there is a much greater risk of subsequent recurrence. Consideration should be given to the use of hormonal ablation.
