Q: Reducing pain from Prostate Cancer?

Hi there,

My father in law has Prostate Cancer.  His PSA level is over 200. He gets treatment at a Government Hospital. They only gave him Medicine to reduces the testosterone, i think its Androgen or something.  But he is in such pain everyday that he cannot get out of bed, he is short breathed lately. The cancer already spread to the bones.  Isnt there anything else they can do for him to reduces te pain, like radiation or something. They only keep giving him pain killers, but it does not help anymore, and i personally think its not very healthy.

Is the short of breath normal.

Please let me know as soon as possible.

I really need your help.

Thanks

Belinda

A PSA of 200 most likely indicated that the cancer has spread to bone. The medication that he is receiving causes the testosterone to decrease, and thus helping to slow down the growth and control the cancer. The shortness of breath that he is experiencing could possibly be due to the pain or an underlying metabolic problem.

The bone pain that he is experiencing most likely is as a result of the cancer spreading to the bone. If he is not responding to the LHRH agent that he is receiving, it is possible to use various chemotherapeutic agents that are available. Depending on where his pain and what bones are involved, focal radiation therapy may prove to be therapeutic. If he were to have collapse of the vertebrae, treatments such as kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty, may help to treat the collapse and relieve the pain.
