Q: What is a false passage and how does this occur during urethral catheterisation?
A false passage implies that the catheter is not placed in the real lumen (opening) of the urethra but goes into a area outside of the lumen. It creates a false opening that the catheter passes into. THere are many reasons for this to occur however most commonly it is due obstruction within the urethra that prevents the normal passage of the catheter.
