There is no problem switching from Flomax to Avodart. Although both drugs are intended to treat the prostate, there are differences.   Flomax is an alpha- blocker and tends to relieve symptoms by releasing some of the tension that is surrounding the prostate and the bladder neck. Avodart is a 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor. By blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, the prostate will ultimately shrink in size in many patients. Although fairly safe, some patients do complain of erectile dysfunction. The effects of Avodart take several months to take effect.
