Q: Flomax vs Avodart

My husband has been using Flomax and recently added Avodart for one month due to non-related surgery and unable to urinate.

He is on Medicare and Blue Cross and I see that starting the new year 2010 the Flomax cost is going up more than double the price and we're unable to handle the cost for this medicine so I've been thinking if there are other options..

He has been on both but the Avodart one month supply will end this week...I was going to contact his urologist, too... Any suggestions

The costs of these medications can be problematic, however they are effective drugs. Flomax will have a generic alternative by May so the costs will be substantially less. Avodart is not generic, however, Proscar (which may not be as effective) is available. Perhaps you can discuss a minimally invasive treatment for the prostate such as a laser or a microwave as an alternative to long-term medication.

Why don't you ask doctor on using generic equivalents of flomax. That could be cheaper. Generic equivalent tamsulosin (flomax) is very affordable. You can find the cost details at http://www.internationaldrugmart.com/flomax.html
