Q: my 78 year old father, 1st psa test

My father has made a hobby, it seems of going to the doctor since retirement, not unlike all of the other retirees down here in Florida. He has never been a day overweight, and swims nearly every day to keep fit. He has always been very proactive in his health. We just learned that he had his first psa test and that it was 24! The reports are going from bad to worse.  What doctor would not recommend this blood test, along with other tests! He seems to have given blood at many of his appointments over the years. In fact, he has just successfully recovered from a knee replacement.

One doctor said he has only seen advanced prostate cancer like this in homeless men who never go to the doctor... He is stage 8 they say, and Monday the oncologist is sending him for a PET scan before they give a prognosis.  It does not sound good. They say his lymph nodes down there are swollen, but the CT scan hadn't picked up any thing anywhere else...What can be done?
