The reason I'm asking is because the doctor won't place the seeds because the prostate is too large. I am now taking avodart to shrink the prostate prior to treatment. Is this common?

Patients can have both prostate cancer and an enlarged prostate. The strategy to shrink the prostate prior to the placement of the seeds is very common, however most Urologists would use an LH/RH analog instead of Avodart. Placing seeds in a large prostate is not as effective as placing seeds in a smaller prostate. Additionally larger glands can pose a problem with regards to the accuracy of the seed placement.
Jody,
From what I know, it is possible to have prostate cancer if your prostate is enlarged, but just because it is enlarged doesn't mean it's a sign of cancer, and avodart is good to shrink it, but sometimes may not shrink it enough. It would be a good idea to make sure they have checked your PSA. Good luck!
