Neither drug would be considered "better".  Both drugs serve a specific role in the treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction in men.  Most importantly an evaluation should be undertaken to ensure that the symptoms are actually from the prostate.  If this is the case then both drugs may be beneficial, and for some patients both drugs may be used.

Avodart, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, is intended for patients who have a "bigger" prostate, and is intended to shrink the prostatic size.  It is effective in approximately 60% of patients and may take up to 6 months to see the maximum effect. Flomax, an alpha-blocker, helps relax the fibers of the prostate resulting in a stronger flow, less night time urination, and and better bladder emptying.
