Q: Side effects of lupron for men

My husband had Proton therapy and Lupron Therapy to treat Prostate Cancer . He had two rounds of lupron.  Of couse the side effects are hot flashes and sweating..could this cause the potassium level to drop.  He is also having unsettling boughts of deja vu?  I attribute this to anxiety and perhaps the chemical imbalance of his potassium leve?

I urged him to have blood work done to check it out  ? Do you agree?

Hi Karin,

Thanks for your question.  You can find out more here: Side Effects of Lupron.

The article does not specifically mention potassium levels being affected by Lupron, but it sounds like the anxiety is in line with other side effects mentioned, like depression, mood swings, and dizziness.

If these effects started with the introduction of Lupron, your husband should let his doctor know that he's experiencing them.  While they might lessen over time, only your doctor and your husband can make the call as to whether the side effects are severe enough to warrant changing the treatment regimen.

Hope this helps,

Dan

Karin- I was diagniosed with metastatic prostate cancer in August of 2008. I began my treatment at Mayo in Jacksonville. Because the cancer had metastasized, the prostate was not removed during surgery and I started on Lupron. In March of 2009, I underwent radiation at Moffit in Tampa where my treatment continues today. Every four months I get an injection of Lupron and every six months I have lab work done. So far, my PSA level has been down in the barely detectible range which is great!

My side effects include about 15 hot flashes a day, no libido, shortness of breath, minor weight gain (the red wine doesn't help) and I am generally more tired. Instead of sleeping 7-8 hours a night, I sleep 9-10 hours in part I suppose because the hot flashes interrupt my sleep. But you know what? I'm alive and loving it!

Best regards, Bob
