Painkillers may hinder prostate cancer screening
New research suggests that taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen may affect the results of a common screening test for prostate cancer. A recent study of 1,319 men found that those who took NSAIDs had blood levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) that were about 10 percent lower than men who didn't take them. Researchers say this finding suggests that doctors should ask men about the painkillers they are taking before patients undergo prostate cancer screening that measures levels of PSA.
