Measles virus may treat prostate cancer

A new animal study suggests that a strain of the measles virus may treat prostate cancer. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that a strain of the virus used in the measles vaccine was able to infect and kill prostate cancer cells. In the study, mice treated with MV-CEA lived twice as long as mice who were not given the virus, and one-fifth of the treated animals had complete tumor regression. Experts say the vaccine has been used safely for forty years, and that it could also be used as an add-on therapy to traditional prostate cancer treatment.
