Virus may determine who needs prostate cancer treatment

The presence of a virus in prostate cancer cells could help doctors determine who needs aggressive cancer treatment, a new study suggests. Researchers say xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus (XMRV) is more likely to show up in aggressive tumors. The presence of the XMRV virus could help doctors decide if patients have aggressive tumors or slow-growing cancer--which could help prevent unnecessary treatment.
