My 13 y/o son has RA

By Rebecca Wednesday, June 17, 2009

My question is. My son has been on Methotrexate since March. He gets VERY bad stomach acid and vomits alot. He actually has stomach acid come out his nose frequently. Have any of you had this experience. I am at a loss. I wish there was something I could do to help him with his side affects. He take 1mg folic acid daily and he takes nexium. It does not seem to be helping. Any input would be appreciated.

Is he taking the pills or shot? If it is the pills...then he should diffinatly try the shots instead.

Thank you for commenting. He is taking the shot once a week. He could not take the pills. We tried them for three weeks. He was competely miserable. He would vomit for 5 days after the pills. Then he had to days of no vomitting then the pills again. It was terrible.

Hi, I was on the pills for close to 11 years, and had the same issues-and had to go to the shots too-that's what i'm on now, but have only been on the shots for a little over a month myself. But i was told the shots are easier on the stomach, but i do have some neausea even with them-just not as bad, so far anyway! Have you discussed this with his Rheumatologist yet? There maybe somthing else he could take to help with these symtoms...If you go to the exsperts on this site-and look for Lene Anderson's posts-i believe she has one on what to do-to help with some side effects on these RA meds. I have not checked that out yet myself, but maybe there is somthing on there that can help, or he may need to try a different drug! It is not worth him to be on the methotrexate-even if it does help with the RA....if he is feeling so bad from the side effects. I hope this helps...if nothing else, just call his Rheumatologist and let them see what they can do. Cheryl

Cheryl thank you for your input. I will talk with her. It is so hard to get into the office as they are always so booked. I think that i will call today and see if there is anything that they can do for him. I appreciate your time. I just posted to see if others had this same symtom and what they have done for relief. THank again for your input.

So glad you did post...It is a very common problem with a lot of people who take methotrexate, it is a powerful drug for a powerful disease, it is a chemo agent-they used it for cancer treatment, but it's a lower dose we take for the RA, but still can have complications b/c it is so potient! All the RA meds are powerful and do come with sideffects of some sort usually-some can be helped, and some not.

I do hope you'll let us know how he turns out.

I meant to say use..for cancer. It is still used for different types of cancer! Some people can tollerate methotrexate real well, and some can't tolllerate it at all.

My 16 year old daughter has psoriatic arthrits (might as well be RA) and has been on methotrexate for about 6 months with no help. She doesn't have any serious side effects. She has had the dose upped once and she still doesn't really feel any relief. What is the next step? As a mom without anyone to talk to about this I never know where to go to ask questions.

I am very sorry to hear about your daughter. I feel like we mothers are at the mercy of our childrens treating physicians. How much medication is your daughter taking? Have you asked your doctor if she may also have Fibro Myalgia? (spelling?) I have had ALOT of people tell my about this debilitating disease. It is something that I intend on looking into for my Bobby. I am not sure what the next step is for you and your daughter but I hope that you can find something that helps with her symptoms.

MTX did nothing for my daughter so we visited a Naturopath and had amazing results. I csnnot tell you how amazing the improvement has been. She was given probiotics, tested for food intolerance and put on an elimination diet for a while. She was then found to be tolerant to most of these foods and they were reintroduced. She has had a Humaworm cleanse too. Believe me it has worked. Google Leaky Gut and RA, Humaworm. Also Google McDougall Diet and look on YouTube. I hope that you will believe what I say as I cannot bear to think of others suffering the way she did just weeks after having her first baby.

I did write a post about managing side effects and you can read it here. There are some things in there that may be helpful to your son. However, this is very severe side effects and may qualify as intolerable side effects (I'm trying to be polite and professional year, but to me what you're describing is unreasonable side effects).  I'd recommend you call the doctor's office and ask for an emergency appointment, describe what's happening to the receptionist - she is the one with all the power in your doctor's office and if you can convey to her how frightening this is and how sick your son is, she may be able to squeeze you in. I think it's time that you speak to your son's rheumatologist about other treatment options.  If you're not satisfied with the response you get - whether that her addressing this problem or you're unable to get an appointment - get a second opinion. You need to have a rheumatologist who will be available when necessary and the side effects that your son is experiencing definitely qualify as needing the doctor's attention. Please let us know how it goes?
