Teach the doctors

By oftentired Tuesday, January 18, 2011

For four years after being diagnosed with RA I kept hearing "your sed rate is not elevated."  I have a blood disorder and it's in my chart. Well I researched online and guess what?  A sed rate cannot be done on a patient with spherocytosis because it will give a false reading.  Of course it will but why didn't anyone else know it?

There are other diseases that affect the sed rate and I wonder if other patients know enough to research their own diseases and lab results.  To date I have informed pathologists, family medicine docs and rheumatologists.  Don't expect anyone to have all of the answers and be very diligent....trust your own common sense.

Excellent information and post!  We have to advocate for ourselves and work with our physicians as a team in order to get the best care.

Thanks for sharing this!

You're absolutely right - doctors may be experts in medicine, but it doesn't mean they know everything. It's essential to be a good advocate for yourself, to be informed and to not believe everything they tell you.

Thank you so much for posting this. It's very valuable information.
