finally eating a little better & what a nice difference!

By dark star Sunday, June 06, 2010

After dealing with severe RA & Fibro for years now, I've had it with the constant pain & all the darn drugs. Unable to get out of the vicious cycle we all get stuck in, I've been only getting worse.

So...I've finally made a serious long time commitment to eat healty. I've started eating lots of baby spinach leaves with fruit, oatmeal, veggies with most meals, cutting back on coffee, and drinking lots & lots of water. Most importantly, NO MORE SUGAR. No more beloved cookie dough ice cream, no more coffee with sweet vanilla creamer. I'm finally not missing my sugar. These small changes have started to make big difference in how I'm feeling. I have a little more energy & strength to go for a walk, or even dance.

Just wanted to share my story, hoping to inspire & help others.

Thanks,

Happy to hear your dietary changes are helping you feel better.  I too, am experimenting with changes in my diet.  I eat lots of vegetables and drink at least eight glasses of water a day.  I have a nutritionist friend who advised me to eat a lot of deep-colored vegetables..........red peppers, green peppers, dark leafy greens, etc.  She also suggested I stay away from all processed foods.  I have been doing this for five or six weeks now. I have lost 15 lbs and I do feel better.  I would like to lose another 20 lbs, if I can. I sometimes have trouble getting enough protein, but if I'm short on protein for the day, I eat a protein meal bar, and that has 10 mg of protein in it.  Wishing you continued success with your new, healthier diet.  Please let  us know if you discover anything else that may be of benefit.

I agree that eating healthier is much better for us. I know on those days when we don't feel well it is hard to even think of food sometimes.

I have as well been trying to eat the proper things to help my body function better. This time of year is so wonderful for fresh fruits and veggies. I can't wait to go to my garden to pick my own.

Good luck and and I wish you much continued success in your healthy eating endeavor.

I'm always glad to read about nutritional ideas as I've been wheat & dairy free for more than 25 years.  Eating better takes time to adjust and don't kick yourself if you crash and give-in to a SMALL ice cream or such...  I do have a terrible time with sugar thou.  I'd like to loose 40 lbs that are from not walking much anymore and prednisone.  My face is sl bloated, I have "piggy eyes"....  uuuggghhhh!!!!

I love to talk recipes, nutrition, trading one food source for another, helping each other over the emotional eating...  So glad for your post.  Laurie

I'm so happy to hear that! Sugar is a hard one to kick - I've been on Biologics for about five years and one of the strangest side effects for me has been an aversion to anything sweet, it's almost as if the drugs wants me to only eat healthy. I've realized that sugar is addictive - every time I eat anything with sugar (cookies, candy, whatever), I start getting a craving for sweet things, but as long as I stick to fruit for my dessert, I never think of it. Also, when I do eat sugar, I feel nauseous and crappy in general. I read some articles that indicate that sugar can be a trigger for RA (and pain in general, I think), so it sounds like you're making a very healthy choice for yourself..

Thanks all, for the nice supportive comments! It sure isn't easy! Been having big sugar and carb cravings, and been giving in to most of them! Oops! But I'm not giving up! Yes, it seems like the biologic drugs, and other RA drugs, are forcing me to eat right. Not such a bad thing, just really hard to kick the sugar drug! It also helps to have a stocked fridge & meals planned ahead of time, and neither are my specialty, haha.

Hope you're all doing well !
