I have had it with my Rhuematologist. She thinks if she treats my pain that she's "not treating the disease, RA." When I'm in pain or having a flare and see her, this is what she tells me. It's so maddening! I'm waiting to get in to see a pain management specialist, but I can't see him until 7/13.
I think it's crazy that a Rhuematologist won't treat all facets of RA. I mean, I'm doing much better on Methotrexate and Enbrel, but I still have pain. And on those pain days I just want something that will make it go away so I can function!
I just can't understand why some doctors shy away from narcotic pain relievers- sometimes I feel like some junkie when I ask for something for pain!

Sunshine,
I have had a similar experience with my rheumy. After doing some research, I have found that they will not prescribe strong meds as they do not have that expertise and pain meds have to be monitored very carefully. Pain management doctors have the expertise in administering pain meds and monitoring pain med usage. I am currently seeing a pain mgmt doctor and have received stronger pain meds, been tested for nerve and muscle damage as well as receiving nerve blocks in my neck and back. A rheumatologist does not have the training in doing those things. I know it is hard to wait so long to see a pain mgmt doctor, I had to wait two weeks before I could see mine. I used the meds that were given me by the rheumy, used heat, sleep alot to get through it. I used benadryl to help me get some sleep. I wish for you a reduction of pain. My pain mgmt doctor has said to me that the pain will not go away, but it can be reduced. Please let me know how it goes with the pain mgmnt doctor.
