I have had it with my Rhuematologist. She thinks if she treats my pain that she's "not treating the disease, RA." When I'm in pain or having a flare and see her, this is what she tells me. It's so maddening! I'm waiting to get in to see a pain management specialist, but I can't see him until 7/13.
I think it's crazy that a Rhuematologist won't treat all facets of RA. I mean, I'm doing much better on Methotrexate and Enbrel, but I still have pain. And on those pain days I just want something that will make it go away so I can function!
I just can't understand why some doctors shy away from narcotic pain relievers- sometimes I feel like some junkie when I ask for something for pain!

Your rheumy is right, she must treat the symptoms. We are mostly all in the same boat. Not many docs will prescribe pain killers especially to those of us with chronic illness's. Mine gives me tramadol and the voltaren gel and patches. I take a low dose of prednisone daily and more if I am hurting. I use heat alot to help and watch my activities and during a flare I go get steroid shots to help me through it. It's hard but its safer than the possibility of becoming addicted to pain killers. I am sorry for your pain and I hope you get some relief soon.
