Found my way back! Glad to be here.

By Barb Thursday, April 19, 2012

Cool Hello All, it's been a while since I've posted here.  I think around late July 2011 was the last post.  Well, its been nasty out there.  I was stuck in what I call the
"Crash Zone". Sometime first of August I started with a slight sore throat, you know the kind that is annoying but really doesn't hurt.  That continued for the entire month, saw my doc about week three and we cultured it, nothing grew, but we decided to treat with antibiotics anyway, because I was on the MTX and Enbrel.  My medication regimen was causing my body havoc as well and was being treated for side effect symptoms, changing meds to try and find the right combination and to take as little as possible.

Early September 2011, car accident left me with some blurry vison and a concusion, let alone in the hospital and off my meds for 10 days or so. So, off all of my medications when I finally was released still was quite foggy and not able to work yet. Saw my rheumy and slowly was going to restart my regimen, starting with my MTX and Pristiq only, then every month adjust and tweak to find that magical combination again.  Well, I was on the MTX for only about 8 days and Ta-Da... sore throat returned with a vengance!  Within another 2 days I was in the hospital again, with a raging infectionand what is called peri tonsilar abscesses. I had two in my throat. Unable to swallow anything even my own saliva, place on IV therapy for 14 days and surgically drained the abscesses, finally started to feel better, but off my meds again and was in pain, alot of pain. So, went home with antibiotics for additional two weeks, then had my tonsils removed at the age of 44.  OUCH! I think the tonsils hurt much worse than my RA pain at that time.  finally sometime mid December was recovered enough to get back to work.  First day back was 12/26/11.  Restarted only MTX by 12/30/11 and guess what... ? Back in the Hospital by 1/4/12 with another infection by the same bug, Strep.  Everytime I was getting better, I got knocked down, crashed into over and over... I really thought I was not going to get through this, but fortunately I had my family / friends praying and God on my side. Finally, by the end of January I wass back to work, but still in a lot of pain. Not taking anything at this point, which was not good, but it was better than being very ill.  Begining in February, had a very long discussion with my primary and Rheumy at my Rheumy's office, yep both of them together in one place!  how awesome is that? ! Together we devised an aggressive plan to get me back on track and it was goining ok, until wham another flare, OMG! Still taking medications, but am now working from home and having to keep my stress level down to a minimum, changing the way and what I eat as well I go to my docs just about every other day (minus weekends of course).  Now, I am on Orencia, Plaquenil, Melixocam, Pristiq, Elavil, Tramadol, and a multi vitamin. I am still having pain, but somewhat better.  My lab work is all of whack, I just pray I can get back to my life at some point. I am praying that the Orencia will help eventually, If not not sure what my options are... We shall see.  I have been reading some posts and that is what brought me back.  I am struggling, but one thing I will not do is to live with taking medications that cause me more problems.  Just thought I'd share my recent experiences, It's been quite crazy... Hope everyone else's is going better! Take care, have a magical day, Barb. Kiss

Barb, welcome back!  Sheesh, what a nightmare that was...  Sorry to hear you had to go through all that.  I'm glad you are getting everything back into the right row!

Thank you for the support, appreciate this site for sure. Barb

WOW, what a time you've had... I hope you get your pain under control soon. I've had a scruffy manly voice for several years now and they told me it was acid eroding my vocal cords....I have had surgery for acid reflux and they still put me on protonix... I dunno but dealin. OMG, I am so glad they finally got your problem taken care of. But why did they not keep you on your RA meds?? And a tonsilectomy as an adult is about as bad as natural childbirth for 2 weeks solid.. I will keep you in my prayers. By the way any tips on what kinda work I might could do from home..... Take care

Thank you Angie for your comment.  Fortunately, I am a nurse and am able to complete some of my daily work at home.  I am actually looking for something as well, that I can do mostly from home but have not found that yet.  Still looking.  Maybe one of our community members has some suggestions for us.  I still need to work, but I have had a big dose of reality with the past illness in my life.  The reason I was not kept on my RA medication was that I was  not able to fight the infection while on those medications as my immune system could not handle the assalt. I remain hopeful that the Orencia will eventually work, until then I just keep dealing with the daily challenge of living with the pain and stiffness.  I pray you find some kind of work that you are able to do that will fit in your current situation.  Barb Wink

Dearest Barb,

I have been wondering if you were okay.  I was hoping, you were in medical remission or something, and not really ill. I see now what you have been up to, sweet girl, and it wasn't a good thing.  So sorry!

All I have to say is thank God you are a survivor.  What you have been thru is enough for four people, let alone one. Welcome back, and hope you are on your road to a better year.

Hugs,

V

I agree

Thank you, V, appreciate the support, as always.  This is the reason I wanted to get back to a place one can write about their daily challenges and others completely understand. Love that! I am starting to improve, I just wish that the medications take, didn't have to take so long to begin to work.  Ugh, currently I'm still working some from home and only part time hours in the office, so at least that is nice.  Take care, Barb Wink

Thanks, perfect sentiment. BarbSmile

Barb, man it seems that this is always the way it is, everything at once and more dumped on us. That is the way it has been for me since last August too. I have found IF the meds work we can start to cope with stuff. Hope things are going better and you get  good reports from now on.

Hey, thank so much for that.  I hope you too find some relief.  Some of my problem was too many medications as well.  That is why I advocate really looking at your regimen before anyone just adds another medication to treat a side effect, instead of finding and changing the medication that is causing the problem. If that is possible.  Sometimes it's not, but unless you try you won'd know.  Keep hangin in there, Barb Cool

You've traveled a road that no one should have to go down, however, with that you have passed on your humility, humor and hope to others. Thank you, for this.

Sylvia, Aww.  That is a really nice comment.  I hope that my journey can help someone else. Oh, and I do recommend to avoid a Tonsillectomy while an adult at all cost! LOL, Barb Smile

tonsilectomy as an adult, yes avoid unless have to! Very difficult to recover.... Glad to have chatted with you and the more support the better! I think we are an awesome group Laughing

I am so glad you are back, Barb.  I really missed you, but so sorry you have been thru so much.  My rheumy is adament about NO surgery for me...only if it is totally necessary, as in lifesaving.  I think I understand better now why she is that way.  Hugs to you, sweet lady.

Glad to hear you are through the woods with the infections! Sounds like you had quite a time of it! Hopefully now your rheumy can get your pain and stiffness under control. Hoping that things get better for you!
