How to Practice Yoga with Rheumatoid Arthritis

By Sara Nash, Health Guide Wednesday, April 07, 2010
See the accompanying comic!   After a long and arduous winter, Spring is finally making its way into the world around me. This time of year always makes me feel better.  I feel more awake, more energized and more myself, even when my RA rears its head here and there. The sun has decided n...

I'm one of those persons who sometimes has to keep a couple of toes touching the ground during the Tree pose.  But with this extra support, I can really get the hips to open up in addition to the chest.  I don't do the Goddess pose too often, except when I'm still in bed.  Pillows are handy and the mattress gives kind support.  It's a nice way to begin or end the day.

Absolutely! That's a great tip, Lisa. And I totally agree about Goddess pose at the end of the day before bed- one of my favorites!

Sara, I am new to this RA stuff.  I am a 61 year old male, it isnt suposed to be hapening.  The more I read the more I am suprised by it.  I was diaignosed about three months ago.  After a year of sever pain and swelling I dicided to find out what was wrong - DUH!

I use Mothotrexate, and prednisone (works well)  I practice Yoga three or four times a week, and it helps with the RA, and really helps with the mind.  I think Yoga is key to me.

Hi Stephen,

Sorry to hear that you are now dealing with RA- it's not any fun, but you are in good company here.  Yoga has been a really big help for me- and as you mention, can really help dealing with the mental and emotional aspects of RA as well.  I'm glad it is helping you.

Take care,

Sara

Hello Sarah

Thanks for writing back. It is kind of lonely out here with this.  I guess people  don't understand what we are putting up with.  I just don't talk about it, and ignore it as much as I can.  Yoga has really opened my joints and my mind.  I have learned to just be in this moment, and this moment is fine. I don't worry about the next moment.  This is a very interesting journey, I'll just watch and see what happens.
