Feels like the TinMan
Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 04:09 PMi posted a few weeks ago that Deborah Norville was on a local radio show talking to the morning shows hosts about rare diseases and mentioned RA, because her mother has it. she too said it's not well known.
we should nominate her to be the RA spokesperson. She's lived it secondhand, and is all too familiar with it!
i vote for Deborah Norville.

Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 11:34 AMI am also a RA sufferer, diagnosed when I was five. Now, at 46, am the proud mother of an incredible almost 13 year-old daughter and married to an incredible man so there is MOST DEFINITELY life after RA.....just have to stay faithful, strong and consistent. Let the good days overpower the bad and they'll soon multilpy! I sent my email to the Ellen show and would like to order a bracelet but my computer indicates the site could be bad..is there any other way to order one?

Monday, June 01, 2009 at 12:34 AMThis is Tiffany Westrich, Owner/Designer and website owner of www.jewelrymessages.com . Apparently Microsoft is coming out with a new edition and they said that's why it sometimes warns of my site as a "phishing network"? I promise Sara didn't partner with a bad site :) ... I'm trying to fix this but not having much luck! There is also PayPal/Secure check out so I assure you it is safe!

Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 12:39 PMThanks for sharing this information. I just moved to Long Beach California and will make an effort to get to Santa Monica on June 7th for this event. Thanks for sharing because that line about not looking sick is something I have to deal with every day with people. Believe me, i'm very sick so it helps to see that others experience this reaction too, not just me. Stay positive

Monday, June 01, 2009 at 12:40 AMYes, please come if you can Sunday for the Official Launch Party! It will be 1pm, following the Arthritis Walk, at Big Deans Muscle Inn, along the boardwalk at the beach (not on the pier). There will be a banner outside and I designed special beer cups that they will be serving drinks in
... They ask if you are having pain while holding this beer... then there are 3 possible answers:1. Pain while holding a beer??? NEVER!
2. No pain but it's not my first one!
3. Yes, I experience chronic pain. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis.
(then on the bottom it says:)
Join the Buckle Me Up! National Young Arthritis Awareness Movement: What IS Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Because no one should feel pain while drinking a beer.
On the back there are facts about RA. I'm bringing 100 to hand out and there will be a raffle too!

awareness!
Feels like the TinMan
Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 04:07 PMyay!! i sent an email to the Oprah show (from her site) a few months back about suggestions for shows. I basically said the same thing, that we need more public awareness and people need to know "RA-It's not your Grandmother's disease anymore"..
sadly, i got no response.
you go girl! Deliver the message to the world!!

Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 04:52 PMI think your idea is fantastic hope you raise lots for research. It's a shame that something could be designed into the buckle that is copper. As copper does have a tendenacy to help some aspects of certain arthritis. I'm 48 and was diagonis with RA 2.5 years ago. Wishing you all the best! Stay well and positive!

Are you planning to go global?

Monday, June 01, 2009 at 01:05 AMWe are planning on making these available all over the world... I am working with the PayPal account currently to make this happen (obviously shipping will just cost more :) )... but we are all in this together! Sara and I truly are attempting to unite as many people under one umbrella who are ready for society to understand what we have! The more who understand, the better the fundraising; the better the fundraising the more research, medications, insurance breaks, etc. So the more voices the louder we can become... I will let Sara know when this is taken care of so she can pass on the word!

Partnering Up
Tiffany Westrich
Monday, June 01, 2009 at 12:52 AMHey Sara, it's your partner Tiffany :) . I just wanted to thank you again for joining me in leading this movement. The "official launch" isn't until next Sunday, June 7th, but there have been almost 100 sales in just the last 4 weeks alone! As we discussed, my profit is very little but it was never about the money... meeting all of these wonderful people who are VOLUNTEERING to help lead, sharing their amazing stories... it's just becoming an amazing thing to be involved in!
And... (insert drum roll here)... as we discussed, since it is growing like crazy, I have set up a website that should be up and running after the official launch next week! It will be www.bucklemeupmovement.com and will be, as we planned, a one-stop site for everything you ever wanted to know about RA. It will also include a "communications" center where people can volunteer to become "friends/mentors". I already have several RA patients who have volunteered as well as mothers, friends and a teen diagnosed with RA. I'll set it up so everyone can see the volunteers and if they need to talk privately and get support, they can choose the one closest to their needs...like if a mom wants to talk to another mom, or a teen wants to talk to a patient who is now an adult but diagnosed young and needs guidance.
On another note, the bracelet will be the 'symbol' of the movement and used to raise visual awareness but it is not mandatory to purchase to be a supporter. The focus is raising awareness, fund raising and creating a network where people can go to find anything they need to know about RA! (And...of course it will feature Sara's blog :) ).

more jewelry
Debra
Tuesday, June 02, 2009 at 12:05 PMHey, I've ordered the bracelet, but if things go well, you should recommend a pendant as well. It would be an easier fit for most work wardrobes and besides, buckles are easy compared to the stupid little clasps on the back of chains.

Tuesday, June 02, 2009 at 07:11 PMLol, I like your thinking Debra :) ... we'll put it on our list for the merchandise store that will be on the bucklemeupmovement.com site. We are both so happy with the overwhelming response to the movement, that as I mentioned in and earlier post, we needed to develop a website for everything involved in it! We're also going to have to set up BMU as a non-for-profit itself, then have merchandise such as key chains, car magnets, pens, coffee mugs, etc. for sale that raise money for this movement (currently everything is coming out of pocket for advertising, banners, etc). The bracelet will stay as the "symbol" of the movement but we are certainly open to suggestions for other merchandise as well! Thanks for sharing!

Sunday, June 07, 2009 at 03:27 AMIt's okay to laugh. I am. Can't do much else. It's still on by the way, but tomorrow is methotrexate day. I have a long list of objects I now hate: pop-top cans, door keys, spray bottles, child-proof anything. Just have to laugh at myself whenever I'm stuck. I feel like a monkey trying to figure out how to get the ants out of the hill with a stick sometimes, confused and uncordinated. It helps me to laugh to think there is a British man commentating on what I am doing, "Now, we watch as she attempts to squirt toner into a cotton ball. Ah, her index finger does not work. How will she squirt this quaint plastic bottle? Let's see what she will do... Oh! Look at that... she is setting the bottle down and squirting the bottle with the heel of the hand. Smart girl!"

Public awareness is definitely what we need. Whether it be with jewelry to start, we have to start somewhere. Kudos on starting somewhere, and my prayers go forth for the Ellen show. Now all we need is a national spokesman, woman!!!
