Diagnosing Rheumatoid Arthritis

By crash Monday, November 09, 2009

for about a year now my hands have been hurting, they tingle and burn and they swell and turn red and the bottom joint and hurt very much. Now they are stiff in the morning and I can not walk very well as my hips and my feet and ankles and knees are stiff and hurt so bad!! It is bad in the morning and after I have sat for awhile and really bad at night.  The pain walks me up most of the time.It is on both sides but my right allways hurts more! My hands turn very red and get these things that look like blood blisters on them and hot water hurts them.My ankles and my feet are starting to swell now also, with pain that runs up my shin now. At my job I have to type alot adn file and write and my hands and wrist just hurt so bad, not sure how much more I can take!! I am taking 3-5 800mg ibuprofin a day and I still hurt so bad.My doctor thinks it is RA and has ordered some test.My question is are there other type of arthritis that can do this also. Any information would be helpful as I do not know anything about arthritis.

There are MANY types of arthritis and auto-immune diseases that cause joint pain. I was very hard to diagnose, I am sero-negative so after a bazillion xrays, mri's and bloodwork and imperical treatment I was diagnosed. I searched literally for years for the cause of my pain. I also saw several doctors. It was symmetrical and sudden, my right side still hurts far worse than my left. Ask lots of questions, be your own advocate, only you know what is going on with your body. I hope you find your answers and I really hope it's not RA or any other bad or chronic condition. You can find alot of information here whether it be on the posts or the ask section, I did. Some info might be personal experience and some actual ACR information both are very valuable. Good Luck and best wishes to ya

Hello

I am not a doctor, but I do have RA, and your description of your hands mirrors what I experience with RA...I have blood spots....that baffle the doctors...

I have been diagnosed with RA for about 5 yrs...and even with the ladder of meds I have taken...(I now take biologics by infusion) I am still having constant pain practically in every joint...

Today my feet are swollen and painful, my ankles hurt terribly, knees kill, elbows are practically locked....its hard to type this....my fingers are extremely swollen, red and my wrists and hands have deformities...and my neck feels like I have a pinched nerve...

Walking becomes a limping hobble...they usually refer to this as a bad flare, but this has gone on for almost a month...( I am usually used to a little fluctuation in pain)...not this time....it is constant..and sleeping is something I miss...

I say all this not to be negative, but to urge you to ask your doctor to do all the labs and bloodwork necessary to come to some kind of conclusion....

Just a note:  I went from being a healthy athlete who could run miles and work out with weights with no problem...to not being able to get off a chair without help...

infact, these days, I am blessed with a family that is there for me....

So don't delay, go to the doctor and if one doctor doesnt resolve it for you, get a second opinion...

Good Luck!

Lizzy
