Resveratrol put my arthritis in remission. It might work for you too!

By grantsprings Thursday, September 13, 2007
It is difficult to explain to someone the pain and stiffness that you experience when you have rheumatoid arthritis. Excercising every day used to be a painful event that felt more like self mutilation than self enrichment. Celebrex took away the bulk of my pain and suffering.

So I resigned myself to the fact that Aleve or naproxem sodium would be my best friend for life. That was until reading about research concerning a compound found in red wine called resveratrol. Although I was taking resveratrol for other reasons it ended up having a profound affect on my arthritis. In fact today my joints feel twenty years younger and physical excersion that once would have made getting up from a quiet position almost impossible is now commonplace. The laughable part is that discovering this treatment and my subsequent recovery was by accident.

Rheumatoid arthrits is an autoimmune disease that affects over 4 million individuals in the US including myself. The human immune system consists of a powerful set of cells and messengers that are very effective at finding and eradicating foreign invaders. When these tools are mistakenly directed towards the body itself the result in the case of rheumatoid arthritis, is the direct destruction of joint connective tissue and significant pain, stiffness and swelling.

My grandmother had rheumatoid arthritis and it was a good possibility from a genetic standpoint that it would affect me as well. Originailly it was my belief that all my joint pain and stiffness was a direct result of my frequent exercise and age. A sports injury to my shoulder and a prescription for Celebrex changed my mind. After a few days on Celebrex my joint pain diminished significantly and missing even one day of the drug resulted in pain and stifness remission. I was resigned to take a couple Celebrex or naproxem sodium for the rest of my life.

About one year ago while reading the New York Times a certain article caught my eye. The article talked about how scientists were investigating a compound found in red grapes known as resveratrol. For many years scientists have been trying to understand why the French population eats rich foods without high rates of heart disease and diabetes when compared to Americans. Researchers discovered a compound called resveratrol that when fed to mice in significant amounts resulted in profound effects. Mice that were fed a rich diet high in fat developed diabetes and other diseases related to a high fat content diet. The mice on resveratrol did not develop the same types of disease and lived significantly longer than their non resveratrol counterparts.

Resveratrol is readily available on the Internet in supplement form. Basically large amounts of red grape husks are dried and mashed and put into capsules. Instead of drinking five bottles of wine every day just take pill. I decided why not. Research already showed that red wine was good for you and now it could be taken in larger doses without all the alcohol. The first batch of resveratrol was purchased and taken sporadically. Occasionally my web surfing would turn up other articles about resveratrol and all were positive except for one. The article said that resveratrol was heat labile and denatured at relatively low temperatures. This meant that the resvertrol that had been stored in my car was useless.

Better than ibuprufin, or anything my doctor prescribed.  I use a high purity,98% resveratrol extract.  You can find several vendors on the  web with google.  I found I needed a fairly hefty dose, around 500 milligrams, to get near total relief.

Being an engineer, I researched the stability issue.  As long as it's stored at or below room temperature, and kept in a dark place, it is stable for up to two years.  Ordinary capsules in a standard issue supplement bottle is sufficient if you don't keep it in your car's glove compartment, or over the kitchen stove.

My brother tried it with the same results.  Now two brothers, their wives and my parents are using resveratrol with similar results.

I had started to have some pain in my hands that looked like I was beginning to get arthritis. It is definitely in my family. Then I started taking resveratrol and after about a month all the pain is gone. I might add that I have started weight lifting again and my workouts are like I was 20 years younger and I am able to increase the resistance fairly rapidly. This is unexpected for a guy 63 years old.

Hello!

I HAVE RA FOR 5 YEARS. I STAYED ON NOT HEAVY DUTY DRUGS. Doctors are surprised that I HAVEN'T DEVELOPED ANY DAMAGES TO MY JOINTS. MY BLOOD TEST SHOWS A BAD PROGNOSIS FOR ME. Well, I thought it is a healthy diet and exercise, also drugs ( I am sure it all counts). I also drank a lot of red wine. This summer we switched to white wine and my pain became soooo severe as never before. I thought about what I changed in my diet  and came to conclusion that nothing except for the type of wine. So I poured a glass of red wine with dinner. Next morning I woke up with no pain or stiffness. So I went on Internet and found out that the others noticed the same effect red one had on their arthritis. I tried resveratrol and it works!!!! I STOPPED TAKING DRUGS. It has been almost 3 weeks since I stopped. I would like to see what will happen after all the drugs will get out of my system. Before I could skip the drugs only for 3-5 days but I WASN'T having red wine every day and didn't take resveratrol.

I WILL LET YOU KNOW if somebody is interested in my experiment. Doctors give you drugs and you can't drink alcohol with most of them. That is why a lot of people never discovered it I guess. I was dating people after I divorced and went out a lot. I LIKE RED WINE and this is how I accidently discovered my relief. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT WORKS and if it works long term (but it works for 5 years already). But isn't it the same with drugs except that drugs have dangerous side effects. I AM HAPPY about having an option of non-alcoholic resveratrol. Most people I told didn't believe me in my theory. We'll see.

I use Longevinex and like it. Based on the writer's description, it seems likely to be Longevinex or maybe Nature's Way. One commented he uses 98 purity that works, and

I think there are a couple of good brands of those as well. (Id avoid Walgreens for now since it is only 25% pure)

I wonder how much the writer used. I know people who have positive results using between 100mg and 400mg of Longevinex a day.

A common dose is to take 5mg/kg as Dr. Sinclair seems to have done. So a 175 pound man would take 400mg a day (200 in morning and 200 in evening -- probably with food). Some think you should move to 500mg/day while  others claim benefits at the 100-200mg range.  It might be a good idea not to start at 500mg due to a possible upset stomach, but that depends on the person.

It seems that most under 30 don't notice much difference. I'm also not sure it is good for women under 40, so check with a doctor. Unfortunately, many doctors don't know much yet and so might say to wait. I hope we will learn more in 2009.

Hello:

Thank you for the reply.

I have not got any reply from the writer so I researched and used "REVATROL" brand and got good results. I tried other brand but unfortunately my labs were not good so I  continued with the Revatrol brand.

In the revatrol brand other than the Resveratrol 200 mg it contains Alpha lipoic acid 100 mg , quercetin dihydrate 100 mg and Acetyl L-Carnitine HCL 100mg. Actually I do not know if these contents are good or bad but have wait and see.

Thanks

Recently resveratrol was featured in a 60 minutes piece and due to demand supplies from retail stores have been difficult to obtain.  I was taking Resvintrol brand that I purchased at $20 for eighty capsules from Costco online.  They no longer have it in stock.  Be careful where you buy the capsules.  Resveratrol is heat and light sensitive.  Packaging is key.  I recently bought pure resveratrol from Megaresveratrol in CT.  The packaging is good and their supplies are derived directly from plant roots.  If you buy the 50% pure it will have a bitter and earthy taste.  So if you can afford it buy the capsules 100% pure.  I think that you will be happy with the quality.  They were the original suppliers to Dr. Sinclair during his studies at Harvard.

Regardless of what you are told.  There is no scientific evidence that supports the idea that resveratrol is an antioxidant.  Many brands sell it as such and what they base their advertising on is a mystery to me.  You can contact me directly if you like at grant@grantsprings.com.

Remeber to give it some time...at least 4 months as far as arthrits is concerned.  Keep taking your regular medicine for pain.  Resveratrol does not treat arthritis pain.... instead it treats the underlying cause of the disease.  Good luck and let me know if it works for you.

Thanks for mentioning the brand you took. Could you also mention how much you took a day?

I noticed energy increases after a week but some other gains required months. Interesting how this is working.

As far as dosage is concerned.  Certainly you should only take as much as you need to get a repsonse.  Some people report that it took as much as 500 mg a day to achieve the best resulsts.  However, recent studies show that you can get results from a much lower dosage.  I took about 100 mg a day which I think is sufficient.  However, you might have to take more over time to keep the same results.

Although resveratrol has not been found to be toxic at these dosages (100mg per day), anything you put in your body can become toxic.  Water, salt and alcohol can all be toxic at some level.  Take only what you need for a response.  At high levels 2000 to 3000 mg a day every day may take a toll on your kidneys and liver over time.

This study showed that 3000 mg per kilogram of body in rats caused renal toxicity.

An equivalent would be for a 200 lb (92 kilograms) male to take 27,000 mg a day!  This is way over the top.  Certainly no one would want to take that much and the cost would be prohibitive.  I thnk that you can get reasonable results at 100-300 mg a day.  Please post if you have tried resveratrol and you have noticed results.

I would like to share a product that helped my Dad who has recently been diagnosed with RA.  He has been taking Vivix from Shaklee and has had terrific results.  Shaklee sells a very high quality resveratrol.  If you go to www.shaklee.net/4goodhealth you can find out more information.

Thank you so much, for sharing your experience.  I do have R.A. and accidentally learn about resveratrol, then I wondered if it did something for R.A., and aparently it does, so I am going to give it a try.  I have spent so much money in other treatments, with little or not effect in treating R.A. symptoms at all.  Thanks again.

I started taking Biotivia's Resveratrol a few months ago for general well-being.  At the same time see a Rheumatologist for suspicion of RA.  All I can tell you is that my hand and feet joints are significantly better.  With a B.S. in Food Science and Human Nutrition and a Masters in Epidemiology and Statistics, I am always suspect of "claims" & even scientific studies.  I'm not sure if it is the resveratrol helping me; but it is certainly coincidental.  I will continue taking it since stopping is not an option to test for recurrence (don't want that severe pain again!!!!!).

Hi, I just ordered 500mg resveratrol and after reading some post I am concerned that maybe I should have bought a lessor mg. Also I am taking Celebrex, does anyone have info about the two together (Celebrex & Resveratrol)? Any responses? Thanks Mike

A few months ago I woke up with painful, swollen hands. At first the symptoms would get better after a few minutes but then began to last all day. My fingers were so swollen I couldn't wear my wedding ring. I went to a hand specialist who determined that I probably had an immunological problem and he is trying to get me an appointment with a rheumatologist. Where I live that can take several months. In the meantime, I discovered that my hands felt much better the morning after drinking several glasses of red wine. I linked the red wine with resveratrol and after visiting this very same website, I decided to give it a try. I've been taking one 250mg capsule of resveratrol twice a day for three weeks now and the results are amazing. I had immediate relief. No more swollen, painful hands. I can wear my wedding ring again. I still plan to see a rheumatologist for a diagnosis but my symptoms have completely disappeared.
