pain came back worse

By Tom Ensley Friday, October 23, 2009

i started the enbrel shot a little over  a month ago, i am still on the meth. just a few days after my first shot i felt better, and after the second shot i felt even better yet! man was i happy! so i stoped the steroids and for the past two weeks i have felt great... on the road to recovery right! well just yesterday i flared up and i hurt worse than ever before.. back, sholders, elbows.. almost everywhere! so i took the shot a day early and started the steroids again, wich i didnt want to do. now i feel like there is no hope. thinking that the drugs have failed? so has anyone else had a sevre flare up  so early in the recovery process?? i dont think this was due to the weather. any input would be great, thanks!

tired of all the side effects... is there help!!

Hey Tom,

Hang in there, I have been on Enbrel since 1998, has worked great for me. Like you, Enbrel started working almost immediately. Enbrel is one of the best TNF's out there along with others. Give the Enbrel some time to really start working and get into your system, I know exactly the pain u speak of. At times feelling literally helpless when we flare up like this (very depressing), but dont give up hope and have faith and work closely with ur Rheumy. Good luck you will feel better.

Hey Tom,

You do need to give Enbrel a chance. It does take a bit to get into your system. I wish you the best with it. I unfortunately failed Enbrel & Humira. But I do know of others that have had very good results with it. Hang in there.

Hi Tom,

I would not give up yet.  It may take awhile for the meds to work.  I too have had this happen and waited 3-4 months before I tried another med. I am bit frustrated though as I've tried many different meds.

I did have a food allergy test and found out that I have intollerance/allergy to Gluten,Soy and eggs.  I notice that if I eat any of these that I have a flare up.  Allergies do create an immune responce so this may be worth looking into.  It did not take away all of my issues but has helped a lot not only with RA but digestive issues.

Be well.  Hope you find something that works.

Hi Tom,

I also just started Enbrel injections 4 weeks ago. Like you, I noticed a marked improvement after first one!  I was diagnosed a year ago, but up until the Enbril, nothing has worked. I've been on Methotrexate, Gabapentin, Plaquenil, Tramadol and Ibuprofen, but none of it worked and just about everything had terrible side effects. But with Enbrel for only 4 weeks, my R.A. symptoms are getting better and I am soooo excited!!

My take on the whole thing is I have accepted that there will always be flareups...but I have also accepted Enbrel and how much better I feel 80% of the time. All these medications do scare me sometimes, because I feel the whole R.A. community are a bunch of guinea pigs with all the new medication. But I do at least see hope with Enbrel. It has cut down the incoveniences to at least a more manageable level.

I guess what I am saying is there is no cure for R.A., so we have to take what we can get. If Enbrel even makes you feel half as better as it makes me feel, take it!

Good Luck!
