When joints gang up

By wonderwoman Monday, January 16, 2012

I have had very painful wrists and hands for years with the right being more painful than the left even though I am left handed. Go figure that out.

Recently the right thumb joint which has always been very painful decided to go gangbusters at the same time as the outside right wrist joint.

I have been wearing a brace on it for weeks and waiting for a rheumy appointment, I will show her my new xray and wait on the results, that arm also gets pins and needles and numbness, perhaps from my right shoulder, ??/who knows

It is very hard to define which joint/muscle is the culprit sometimes, and because as the old song says the hip bone is connected to the knee bone etc etc, sometimes a few go out together in sympathy.

So that is my right side

On my left side, my major problems are left foot and ankle, plantar fasciatis on left foot, left knee which has had surgery before, now has a problem with a muscle on the inside of the knee caused by me twisting it, not to mention my left hip which will need replacing soon

So Imagine me with left side lower half not at all functional, right side upper half not very functional...and everything else jogging along, painful but less so than the main offenders.

If I could draw, it would make a good cartoon

I think that pain scales should be more like an outline of the body with painful areas highlighted in colour according to degree of pain.

Sometimes it seems that the pain from various areas will all melt and merge together and it is hard to define it's source. I recently had a bladder infection but did not notice the pain as the pain from my back/hip is so intense.

It would be good to have a way to separate the pain into neat categories.

Well I will take my long list of current issues to the rheumy in two days, have my sinus op next week, oh I forgot the dentist this week as well, hobble of to shower and bed.

I will keep all braces on all night and find a position in my bed which will allow me to sleep for  a while.

It is important I find to keep a sense of humour going as much as possible

I have a wierd sense of humour and sometimes think our joints talk at night when we are asleep, [like the movie toy story, where the toys are alive and come to life in the absence of people], and plot what they will get up to next.

God bless all who read this

Hi, Wonderwomn,

You have a lot going on!  Hoping your sinus surgery goes well.  Will you be able to take a biologic after your sinus surgery?  Please let us know how you are doing, and tell those joints to not talk so loud that they keep you from getting your beauty rest!

Hugs,

V

Hi V

Yes my rhuemy is waiting for the surgery to hopefully kill the constant infection as nothing else has, so I can start on Orencia.

it is so frustrating when you have pain on opposite sides of your body - if only it was on one side, then you could at least function with half of you!

living with RA is a massive challenge - if it's not one thing, it's the other. Without a sense of humor, you'd be sunk. I really like your imagery of your joints talking to each other while you're sleeping.

Good luck on your dentist and sinus surgery next week. Please keep us posted on how it goes?

Hi Lene

yes the opposite side thing is very annoying indeed, but what is new, as you say  something is always going on.

I do not have private health insurance either, I did not get it when I was younger and could not get it now as I am too sick. Yay for the health insurance providers.

I use our national health care system run by the government, with some visits to private specialists which are 85% refunded.

It is a problem when you need surgery as you then go on a long waiting list.

It is free though.

here in Canada, we also have socialized healthcare (except, it seems, more so - in Ontario, we don't pay anything for doctor's visits). It does mean long waiting lists, but sometimes you can get around it by being a very active advocate for yourself. My mother was lined up for back surgery last year and tentatively scheduled for "sometime in the fall". I encouraged her to call the surgeon's office the first week of every month, letting them know how difficult it was for her to cope and asking if she'd moved further up on the cancellation list. When they got some extra time allocated in the operating room in July, they called her first because she'd been so active in letting them know how much she needed the surgery. Sometimes you can work the system. Of course, sometimes you can't.

Hang in there, sweetie.

Hi Lene

Yes advocacy is good, my rheumy  wrote to my sinus doc urging him to prioritise my surgery, it has still taken fifteen months, but I was previously on a list at another hospital for four years without any joy

Off to see the rheumy today and the dentist ugh

good lord... that's nuts. And I thought Canadian wait times were bad!

part of the problem is caused by people who have health insurance and who  should use private hospitals use the public as they don't want to draw on their unsurance!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that our RA makes us all feel a little (or a lot) lopsided.  I am so sorry your are having such trouble.  Hopefully your Rheumatologist can help.

I like your idea about the pain scales being more like an outline of the body with painful areas highlighted in colors according to degrees of pain.  I think that is  fabulous idea.  It seems that people understand better when they have "visual aide", so this would also help us explain better about what is hurting and to what degree we are feeling the pain. I am not always the best at expressing my pain or how I feel.  A chart like you mentioned would be a great tool.

Hope your Rheumy and Dentist appointments went well.  Take care.  :)

Well folks,

The rheumy said, I might need to go off metho, then changed her mind and said lets try injections. We don't have the self injection option for it, so I need to go to the docs office ONCE A WEEK.

I'm having mri's on knee which probably has a torn ligament and other soft tissue damage, and an mri on the wrist as those joints are severely damaged.

Seeing her again in two months.

The dentist went ok for a dentist visit- expensive though, $300 out of pocket expenses for two fillings.  There is more to be done, but that delightful event is deferred until after the sinus op, hip injection, mri''s etc etc.

Thanks for your concern. I am thinking I need the ra personal assistant one of the other member wrote about, Suzi who did the cartoons.  Just keeping appointments in order is a full time task, not to mention the meds. Oops forgot to mention, we have added an anti-inflammatory back in to the mix, Feldene, it is quite helpful but I will have to be careful as it can be hard on  the stomach and mine is already in a bad way and on meds for that.

Hi, Wonderwoman,

Aren't dentists bills just crazy?  I had two small fillings and one larger filling, and the dentist charged me a little over 400.00.  Ugh  Sitting in a dentist chair is so not fun.  They should pay us!!!  Now I am having two crowns put on. First one is 775.00.  I hope the other one isn't as expensive, since it is for a smaller tooth. We should have gone to dental school! LOL

Happy to hear you have a bit of reprieve form the dentist.  When is your sinus surgery?  Hope that goes very well so that you can take the meds you need.

Hang in there, Wonerwoman.

Hugs,

V

HI V

I just posted on the surgery which happened yesterday.

Maybe we should have married dentists, they do have us over a barrell.
