Sinus op

By wonderwoman Tuesday, January 24, 2012

I have just spent 10, yes 10 years battling chronic sinus infections. With some difficulty and aided by a letter from my rheumy, a doctor agreed to operate even though he was not sure it would help as he defined my constant sinus as a Rheumatoid reaction.

This was the first time a specialist had linked the ra and the sinus problem, it certainly shed some light on it as it had failed to respond to any of the various treatments I had tried. Sometimes it did not even show on scans, thus earning the scorn of previous specialists who thought I was exaggerating. Finally when continual antibiotics were failing I have had the op

During preparation for the anaesthetic,  [that horrible momement when you lie on a bed and wait for the event], I was told that during my previous surgery at that hospital I had experienced bronchospasm. Yet another symptom and contra-indication for me to have surgery. Or should I say another risk factor.

I have had a bit of a look online and am now starting to keep an eye on this symptom

So here I am shareposting the day after surgery, fair bit of pain but controlled by meds, delightful gauze slunt from my ears to my nose to absorb the drainage, hoping for some good results from this.

I am not sure why or how or where so many medical staff lost their humanity and sense of the purpose of being in medicine- caring for people.

My first experience yesterday was an aggressive nurse who asked me if I had cotton undies on!!!!!!!!! My mouth dropped wide, I had to think if they were cotton or not as that had not been the main thought on my mind that morning!

No they weren't cotton, so I got to wear paper undies, still without being told why I should have worn cotton ones.

Next event was post surgery, in the ward, feeling dreadful, I was bought some pain pills. I explained that I could not swallow tablets [ a side effect of ra], and aggressive nurse said,

you mean you came to hospital with your mind made up not to swallow tablets!!!!

I had a tablet crusher with me, and with a sigh of despair the 'nurse' crushed my tablet and generously supplied a teaspoonful of honey to get it down.

Later in the evening during the change of shift I hear this nurse complain loudly about the tablet issue,, also that I had 'bought enough clothes for a month', not true.and had not arranged for a lift home tomorrow'also not true'

This is not the first time I have encountered this aggrressive nurse issue, our hospitals here are not funded well and I know the staff are overworked, but wouldn'dit be luverly, as the song goes, if they could remember why they originally went into their profession.

I don't forge the kind and caring nurses, they are just harder to find than they used to be.

Hugs to you, Wonderwoman.  What you had to endure in the hospital was just plain wrong. It does seem as though there are really good, kind nurses, and really bad, rough talking, non-caring nurses these days.  Not much in between.  Wheneve I run into people like that, I have to wonder what is making them so unhappy.  The worst thing is that the are interacting with people who need them, people who are sick and could use some kindness and support.

I am happy to hear the surgery is behind you.  Here is hoping this surgery works its magic and gets rid of that sinus infection once and for all!  Praying for a better year for you in 2012.

Thanks for the hugs V

In spite of pain, congestion and blood an mucous flow caused by the op, I already feel like my head is clearer, so will be very keen to see how I feel in a couple of weeks.

I slept seven hours straight last night which is unheard of for me. When I looked at the clock and it said 4.30am, I thought it must be broken

roll on recovery I say.

Out local hospital is very overloaded and underfunded due to rapid population growth in the area, but still it just makes it all harder than it has tobe.

I really must track down why I was meant to be wearing cotton undies though, that is a mystery.

We have sever rain here and some flooding, since we had massive destructive 100 year floods last year everyone is nervous. I am living on a hill so not personally threatened.

Cool

Thank goodness you are on a hill.  You don't need anything else to deal with, Wonderwoman! Hmmmmmmm   Cotton Panites...makes aboslutely no sense to me.  Would love to know the answer to that one if/when you find out!

unbelievable...

when you have the energy, you might want to consider writing a letter to the hospital mentioning this. Not mentioning names, just that you encountered this attitude several times over your stay. It might cost a hospital to take a look at their customer service standards and may help someone in the future. (Sorry. Feeling all advocate-y today)

I'm glad this is over for you. Well, I hope it's over. Please keep us posted on the results?
