Pain Patch tip.....

By catlynn1964 Sunday, June 20, 2010

I'm all new to keeping patches on and have struggled with them for 3 days.  I was prescribed Mylan patches. I've had 3 come off in just one weekend! UGH!  Desperate times call for desperate measures so after reading all these posts this is what I've done and seems to be working, even with swimming and showering. It's worth a try if you're having trouble with patches too!

Do your best to keep the "layers" flat as you apply them.....it will make a huge difference in how well it stays on and in place.
Clean the area well with warm water (I put my patch to the left or right of my belly button). Let it air dry well or give it a shot with the cool setting on a hair dryer for about a minute.

Apply the patch.

Curad waterproof tape works very well for me (and I sweat a lot, have oily skin and it's 95 and VERY humid where I live) Apply the tape on all 4 sides of the pain patch.

Then I applied a piece of Tegraderm and taped the edges of that down on all 4 sides with Curad WP tape.

Lastly cut a piece of Glad FREEZER bag (not regualr food bag plastic) to overlap the other layers and tape on all 4 sides. Press down as hard as you can for a minute (if you use a hair dryer, use the low setting for a minute....it helps make the adhesive, on everything, stick a lot better and press hard on it again.

I applied this yesterday morning, have showered 3 times (using hot water and taking my good old time!) and spent 6 hours swimming in the pool. It hasn't budged or bunched up at all since I put it on Saturday afternoon and the patch and layers are bone dry~no water has gotten near the pain patch! (I am calling Mylan for some of those special patch covers but until they arrive this will work.  I am also going to pick up some sports tape that a very wise lady recommended to me! ;)

I sure hope this helps someone~it's frustrating when you only have so many patches and they won't stay on!

Have a good evening!

I use lidocaine patches. I just tape them on with fiber medical tape. Otherwise, they fall off in 2 hours.

With lido patches, use the clear dressing covers (like the ones they place over an IV), works well and stays for ever.Smile

The good thing about transdermal drug delivery is that it is a fairly steady release of drug over a fairly long time.  UNFORTUNATELY, using different tapes and plastics and especially increasing heat to the patch area can dramatically change the way the drug is released.  Check with your pharmacist or the drug company ALWAYS before you do this........  I have seen a man end up in hospital from putting a heat pack over a pain patch which resulted in a big release of drug quite quickly.........

As above, please be very careful to follow the instructions when using any coverings over the patch.  Tape only the edges or use a clear film bandage like TEGADERM (or equivilant).

Another note- if you are in an area that has high heat during the summer and/or you sweat alot, the patch may be releasing too much of the medication at once. I have actually sweated off the patch AND the clear film bandage. I have to be very careful. The warning I have is when the patch starts to bubble up from my skin due to sweating. I haven't gone back to oral meds since this works so much better for me- I just adjust my schedule to being outside only during the cooler parts of the day.

Thanks to the last 2 posters about your cautions but I have discussed this w/my doc and pharmacy and they gave me the OK.  Using the hair dryer for about 30 seconds if perfectly fine!!

Thanks so much!!
